Batch Picking Order Fulfillment
The process in which an order picker fulfills multiple orders at once, mixed into a single picking container is referred to as batch picking. Batches are usually cubed to batch totes to be picked. Orders that are picked as a batch are directed to deconsolidation stations where each batch is broken down into its individual orders and packed out into its final shipping container. MMCI Order Fulfillment batching picking service, powered by DCX Software, will analyze the pool of allocated orders for any items that can be batched picked based upon the batching rules.
Common Batching Types
Single Mixed Batch
Single line orders with single item with a picked quantity of one. The batch may consist of multiple mixed SKUs, but they can be intermixed during the batch picking process since each single either completes an order, or launches an order. This batch type is common for both slow movers and fast movers.
Multiples Batch
Single line orders with a single item picked with a quantity of more than one. In this case, the batch will consist of only a single SKU and the put process will need to direct operators as to the quantity required to either complete the order or launch the order. This batch type is less common.
Cluster Pick Batch
Allows for orders with multiple lines and item quantities to be picked together as a group, usually with a tote with compartments or a picking cart with discrete order locations, which keep the orders separate during the batch picking.
Batch Deconsolidation
MMCI's Batch Deconsolidation Add-On, powered by our DCX Software Suite, is used in conjunction with our Batching Service Add-On. The Add-On will direct the operators on how to process a batch tote based upon the type of batch. As items are confirmed out of the tote, they are processed into orders. The packing slip and shipping label are printed and applied to the system directed shipping container (usually an envelope or small box).
Batch Management
Our Batch Management Add-On provides visibility to any active Batches and allows operators to configure how the Batch Service will group orders into Batches.
Is this method right for your DC?
Batch Picking is best implemented in warehouses where multiple orders need to be or can be fulfilled in one pass without the need for extensive automation. It’s often implemented in addition to piece picking, as it provides higher-levels of fulfillment. However, it may not be beneficial when implemented to satisfy high-velocities of orders with high-velocity SKUs, as it is still a manual process and relies upon the speed at which a picker can operate.
